Invitation for Submission of Papers

Dear Friends,

The Iranian Women’s Studies Foundation (IWSF) is a non-profit organization. It has no affiliation to any political or religious group or organization and aims to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on issues related to Iranian women, to disseminate information on Iranian women’s achievements and to establish a network of communication among communities of Iranian women the world over.

The main activity of IWSF consists of annual international conferences where in a theme related to Iranian women are approached through scholarly presentations, art exhibitions, and artistic or dramatic performances.

The Conference Theme: Women, Peace and Security

The theme of IWSF annual international conference on 14-16 August 2015 in London is «Women, Peace and Security». We live in a time that security for women is diminishing on a daily basis. Conventional and non-conventional wars have exacted a huge toll on human life and threatening our environment, with a disproportionate impact on women and children as the main victims in every war. However, the peace and security of women are not threatened by wars alone and the recent events in Iran and other Muslim and even non-Muslim countries have shown that the security of women both at home and outside has become far more fragile and vulnerable. Violence against women is a worldwide problem that is the focus of the attention of the international community and particularly the UN. Domestic violence, acid attacks on women in Iran, rape and slavery of women by ISIS in the Middle East, kidnapping of hundreds of school girls in Nigeria and lack of personal safety for women in Afghanistan are a few examples of a world unsafe for women.

At our conference, we aim to discuss and analyse these major issues. The lack of security for women is not only an issue for women but needs the attention of the international community, as it represents a lack of security for the whole community. We need to look for practical ways to campaign for the elimination of all kinds of violence against women. Within the framework of this broad statement, we propose the following issues for discussion:

From the gender perspective, what does security mean in personal life and in society?

Structural causes and reasons for violence against women?

The role of women in promoting peace and security defining roles that are most practical and effective?

What is the role of international organisations, mainly the UN?

How do we access the physical and psychological damages of the wars in the Middle East on women?

Do you support the role of women in armed resistance in the region? Why? Review of its political, social, human rights and national security implications.

We intend to discuss these crucial topics at our conference and invite researchers and activists on women’s issues to share the results of their research to allow learning from one another through dialogue to find greater unity and practical solutions to these problems. We invite you to participate in our conference and enrich our discussions by presenting your research in these fields.

For presenting your paper at this conference, please provide us with an abstract of your new research, which should not have been presented or published before in both English and Persian, in no more than 300 typed words, with your short biography by the end of March 30, 2015 to the following email address:

These abstracts will be reviewed by an independent committee and based on their recommendations, the Organising Committee will select the papers to be presented at the conference and announce their decision to the applicant by the end of April 15, 2015. Please note that only those who have not presented papers at an IWSF conference in the last 5 years are eligible to submit their papers.

After the selection of abstracts, presenters will be asked to send the complete text of their papers in both Persian and English for simultaneous translation and later publication in the Foundation’s Conference Proceedings. Papers presented at the conference should be the same as that submitted to the committee. Speakers will have 20 minutes for the presentation of the paper and answer any questions.

With gratitude for your cooperation.
